Overview

MgSiO3

valence electronic charge density of Mg SiO3 perovskite

Oxides are the most important (inorganic) substances in nature and at the same time important materials with many industrial applications. They exist in a wide variety of chemical compositions, crystal structures, and synthesis paths. The study of oxides is providing both an intellectual challenge as well as being a practical necessity, and consequently provides an outstanding basis for the training of excellent researchers in the sciences. In this Graduate School we will focus training and research on the interaction of crystal structure, texture, reaction kinetics, and physical-chemical properties. For research methods we plan to combine unconventional synthesis methods with state-of-the-art analytical methods. We will synthesize materials under extreme conditions (pressure and temperature) as well as by chemie douce. We will combine experimental analytical methods (diffraction and spectroscopy) with simulations, ranging from the atomic to the macroscopic scale.

Through the institutes involved the graduate school offers
  • excellent research facilities
  • complementary expertise in basic and applied material research
  • a commitment to capitalize on the synergies of their complementary expertise
  • international contacts to leading research institutes all over the world
Traditional methods of research will be complemented by
  • a dissertation committee that will advice the students
  • exchange of students among the participating partners
  • exchange of students with collaborating institutes
The research effort will be complemented by a training program for the students that will encompass
  • specially designed classes
  • weekend seminars
  • short courses
  • soft skills, including scientific writing, ethics, team work

More information can be found on the other pages of this website.

For the graduate school we are seeking qualified, motivated students with an excellent master's degree (or equivalent). We encourage interested students to contact potential advisors in the Graduate School about research projects. In addition to the excellent environment for research and training outlined above, we offer a stimulating international environment with flat hierarchies that allow for easy collaborations, and a competitive salary. Starting dates are flexible. Application procedures can be found here
